Healthy Snack Ideas

healthy snack idea fitness lifestyle health food good for you snacks

When it comes to eating well and having a healthy lifestyle, snacking can be the hidden wire that trips a lot of us up. Getting hungry throughout the day can cause us to just grab the quickest and easiest thing from our cupboards, which isn't always the healthiest option. It's difficult to know how to approach snacking from a healthy point of view as most snack foods available to us aren't, but here are a few DIY snacks that are guaranteed to fill a hole and are super easy to put together so lingering in the kitchen is kept to a minimum.

For me the best snacks are ones I can throw together without having to cook; I want to be in and out of the kitchen fast. One that I keep finding myself making again and again recently is the delicious treat pictured. It's banana and peanut butter on rice cakes; so simple to make, literally quicker than making a sandwich but it's a guilt free snack. I use the Kallo Organic Wholegrain Rice Cakes which are only 29 calories per rice cake. I then spread peanut butter over one side of them and cut banana slices to pop on top. Usually there is banana left over, so I leave that on the side of the plate to eat too. I find this is a great snack for when I'm feeling a little bit sluggish as the banana gives me energy and the peanut butter makes it feel like less of a boring snack, even though it's still good for you.

In general I think bananas are a great food for creating healthy snacks as there is so much you can do with them and they have tons of health benefits such as being high in potassium and being great for energy. I love this recipe for home-baked banana chips which is a great alternative to the packaged ones which are filled with sugars. Banana chips are a great snack to make and keep in the house to use for a number of things, I personally like them on my porridge.

When it comes to food I love anything I'm able to freeze as it means there isn't pressure to eat them as soon as I make them. Frozen snacks are a great idea for someone that finds them self snacking a lot at places like work or uni. I totally get it; when you're out and about there's not a lot options when it comes to a healthy but satisfying snack and let's be honest, after four hours sitting behind your desk all you want is that chocolate bar Tesco has on offer. One of my favourite healthy snack ideas that involve the freezer is this amazingly simple but delicious recipe for frozen yogurt covered blueberries. Freezing grapes is also a great alternative to usual grapes and tastes a lot sweeter (sort of like sweets) if you want to get even more fruit into your frozen snack, give this recipe for  frozen fruit and yogurt bites a try.

If you are out and about and haven't made anything up for yourself to snack on but are dying for something to fill the hole, one of my favourite in-store healthy treats are Eat Natural bars, which I always find myself picking up from Tesco Express if I'm out and feeling a bit peckish. Eat Natural bars are free from artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and are also gluten free for all you coeliacs out there. Another all natural, no added anything snack that you can find on the shelves of your local supermarket are Nakd bars, so definitely give both of them a look if you're on the search for something to replace your lunch time bag of crisps with.

  7. This post is basically perfect timing for me right now! I've been pre-making little batches of quinoa for when I'm on the go so much that I'm basically turning into it. Need alternatives!
