Spring Cleaning Your Closet

how to spring clean organise your wardrobe closet clothes advice lifestyle fashion

The new season shapes, shades and prints are slowly creeping into my wardrobe and soon it will definitely (hopefully) be time to give it a spring clean and pop my winter bits away, leaving only my spring wardrobe. Every season I have an organise of my wardrobe and store away all the things that I won't be wearing to make space and also make it easier for me to outfit plan as it's not overrun by out of season clothes. If you're new to organising your wardrobe seasonally, I would usually empty my wardrobe completely, then organise my clothes into three piles; one to give to charity, one to put into storage (so in this case my A/W wardrobe) and one to go back into my closet as my S/S wardrobe. Here are some tips to make spring cleaning your closet a quick, easy and effective job!

-The Hanger Trick-

Although this may seem like more effort than it's worth, this handy little trick is actually a life (and time) saver when it comes to that difficult 'Should I throw this away?' decision. When you place all your clothes that you've selected for your new season wardrobe back into your closet, turn all the hangers so that the end of the hook is facing towards you. As time goes on and you take items out, when you put them back in, put the hangers in the normal way, with the end of the hook facing the back of your wardrobe. Next season when you come to organise your AW15 clothes, the hangers that haven't been moved and still have the end of the hook facing towards you should seriously be considered to be put in the charity pile as they've not been touched for the whole season.

-Decide In Trends-

If I know certain textures or prints are going to be hot this season then let that be a deciding factor for you when you're asking yourself, "Do I really need this out?". You may have a statement jumper that you absolutely loved last season, but do you think it'll still be a go-to item with the new trends in place?

-Be Practical-

I wouldn't have a cami top out in my winter wardrobe, so there's no reason to have winter boots out in your spring/summer wardrobe. I know how it is when you love an item of clothing and you don't want to put it away for the season, but if it's not going to be something you're going to wear it'll just be taking up wardrobe space. This is why it's better to have a 'storage' pile as well as a 'charity' pile as it means just because it's not in your wardrobe doesn't mean it's gone forever. It's only in storage, don't worry!

-Sort By Garment & Colour-

When I do this I will usually take everything out of my wardrobe, bag up what I'm keeping out and then put back what has made the cut to my spring wardrobe. When you're putting your clothes back on your rails don't just put them back in any order, sort them by type of clothing and then within their type, sort by colour. This will make it super easy for you to find what you need and although it may sound like a time waster it really isn't and will save you loads of effort and time in the future.

-Be Smart With Storage-

If you've got a lot of floor space on your wardrobe, use it! Pop a shoe rack in there to store your shoes neatly or invest in some baskets to keep items like scarves and gloves. Think outside the box when it comes to storage and utilize all the space and nooks and crannies you have around your bedroom.

  11. Thanks for the tips. It's too cold out to swap my wardrobe just yet, but I turned all my hangers round at the beginning of September, so when I do I'm sure there will be quite a few items that I can give to a charity shop. I order my clothes by type, so all my skirts are together etc.

I only use wooden hangers, and if I'm running out of them that's when I know it's time to Ebay an item!
